Who is Frankie OnCall and how long have you been in business?

Frankie OnCall was started in October 2004, and owned and operated locally. Frankie OnCall goal is to help you simplify the computer technology for your small office, home office, and your home. We offer technology solutions designed to fix problems and maintain efficiency.

What is your service area?

Our Service Area also includes both Kansas (KS) and Missouri (MO) in the Kansas City Area (KCMO). Cities we serve include Leawood, Overland Park, Olathe, Mission, Kansas City, Grandview, Lee’s Summit, Lenexa, North Kansas City, South Kansas City, Gladstone, Independence, Pleasant Hill, Raytown, Northmoor, The Plaza, Midtown, Downtown, Westport, KC Crossroads and River Market Area.

I love what I do.  I enjoy my work, being a business owner and I have the best clients in the world.  I work hard to maintain a balance between personal and professional life.  I workout a lot and that sure helps.  I do my best keep on smiling. What is smart home technology?

“Smart Home” is the term commonly used to define a residence that has appliances, lighting, heating, air conditioning, TVs, computers, entertainment audio and video systems, security, and camera systems that are capable of communicating with one another and can be controlled remotely by a time schedule, from any room in the home, as well as remotely from any location in the world by phone or internet.

Installation of smart products gives the home and its occupants convenience and savings of time, money and energy.

What kind of devices do you work on or not work on?

We provide basic services on computers, laptops, and mobile devices for small business and home networks of 10 computers or less. Our services include services such as file sharing, networks, set-up, and sharing files. We also work with computers, wireless networking, smart home integration and surveillance/security cameras.

For mobile devices, our services include basic security and optimization, however, we do not repair phones or tablets that are not working. We are not in the business of repairing phones or other mobile devices that are not working (both physically or software issues).

Do you provide warranties?

We warranty our services 100%. Warranties on products we sell carry all manufacturer warranties. If you ever have a problem with a product we sell, we will provide options through our vendors or with the product manufacturers. As a service based company, we do resell products from different vendors and can help you with any manufacture warranties. You can read more on our guarantees here.

My hard drive died, is there any way to recover it?

We are adept in data recovery on many levels.  Many times the solution is easy. If it is more complicated, we can provide options to help your attempt to retrieve the data.

First of all, before anything else – stop using the device. Every time you use the device you risk damaging the data. Also, never try to recover files back to the same drive. ALWAYS move files to a new drive. If this is your main drive, you MUST remove the drive before you attempt any recovery because the operating system will always write temporary files that can damage your files.

The best solutions are always to call before there is a problem. For example, if you have a drive making clicking noises, call us. Frankie OnCall can provide many different ways to backup your data before you have a problem. It is always much easier make a backup and restore your files than to salvage files from a drive that is failing. However, even then there are solutions.

My computer is slow, how can I fix it?

There is no one answer on this one.  “Slow” could be virus issues on the computer, but that is not always the case. Your computer may also need a simple update like ram, or you may need something newer. Sometimes you may need a fresh install of your current operating system. Other times, there might be problems internally with your network, or even your service provider.

First, we should determine which is slow for you – only after that can give you the best answer.  Many times we need to see what you see to diagnose it super best for you.

Do you work on MACs, PCs and Linux computers and other devices?

We do work on both Windows systems and Apple computers. We also work on Linux system including Chromebooks, Android and IOS devices. As mentioned before, we do not repair broken mobile devices like screens or hardware issues.

My wireless signal goes in and out, what does that mean?

This could be one of several problems.  Your equipment could be failing.  You could have a line issue outside of the home or office or, you could have a proximity issue.  All have to be tested to find the best solution.

My new computer isn’t working, how can I figure out what’s wrong?

Call me, we’ll get to the bottom of it and get you back up and running in no time. We can also help you set up your new computer or devices including basic training if you need it. That is our specialty.

What’s all the fuss about ransomware?

Ransomware is a type of malware that locks your computer screen and prevents you from accessing your computer until you pay a ransom – which involves giving away money or your password. Ransomware originates from the word “ransom,” which is a price paid for something that has been lost or damaged. The suffix “-ware” is used to categorize different forms of computer programs. In this case, your computer is the hostage; and you must pay a price to get it back to normal.

What are basic rules to avoid ransomware?

  1. Don’t visit bad sites. Stay away from sites with illegal activity and pirated software.
  2. Use emails with care. Never open content looks suspicious, and always double check with your friend if he/she has sent that email before you open a file you were not expecting.
  3. Use Internet security software. These programs can block a ransomware and keep them updated before it fully infects your computer.
  4. Use safe mode. This is useful when your computer is infected or locked by the malware. Sometimes we can bypass ransomware locks and use antivirus software in safe mode.
  5. Boot from a live CD or USB. If safe mode does not work, boot from live antivirus CD or USB. Since they are independent of your hard drive, malware cannot block them.
